2025: Uppvaknandet / The awakening
Anna Jurkiewicz
Anna Jurkiewicz is a transdisciplinary artist working with sound, video, writing and voice. She engages in artistic research around non-human timelines, architectures and interactions in various locations and contexts. Some of her projects focus on karst landscapes created by water through deep-time processes of dissolution and sedimentation. Others are centered on multispecies, emergent relations that produce space and habitats. Her areas of interest include soil-making organisms such as springtails (Silent Partners project, solo exhibition in 2023) and wild pollinators (Beeing Beecoming co-creative project including design for insects in an urban setting, sensory workshops, ecopoetic collective mapping and writing, participatory scores for interspecies choreographies of embodied cognition, and video installations presented in Messy Sensing exhibition in Graz). Her artistic practice often comes with the intention of developing, strengthening and promoting interspecies empathy.
During the stay on Orust, Anna Jurkiewicz will focus mostly on the life of mesofauna (springtails, mites etc) in soil, moss, forest litter, coastal area and on sweet water surfaces. However, her practice absorbs and processes any kind of interactions emerging at a site, so the project can also involve insects or other animals. Using Astrida Neimanis’s conceptual framework, the artist considers springtails as bodies of water (which humans also are) and researches their unique relationship with water through non-invasive on-site observation, deepening her understanding through critical reading of scientifically produced knowledge.
The residency will result in gathering material for new works including writing, sound art and video. Jurkiewicz will offer a public event at AiC, centered on the sensory exploration of the environment (with elements of deep listening, ecopoetics, simple performance scores and alternative ways of mapping) with focus on the ground level (soil, litter, moss, water surface).
