Bereket Hailemariam

Bereket Hailemariam is a Malmö-based dramatist and poet. After studying theology in London and philosophy in Norway, he attended Biskops Arnö’s writers’ school before completing a Master’s degree in literary creation at HDK-Valand. Most recently, in the winter of 2025, Bereket presented the play Teorier om människan (Theories of Man) at Backa Teater. He is currently working on a new play, Endast enär nåd (Only Through Grace), as well as his debut book, the short story collection Tre sånger (Three Songs).
At AiC, Bereket will be working on his literary debut, a short story collection with the working title Tre sånger (Three Songs), and hopes to complete it during his residency. His artistry revolves around silence — the rhythm, music and tension of silence, both on stage and on the page.
In 2026, AiC will host AIR Litteratur Västra Götaland, which provides writers and translators from around the world with the space and time for artistic renewel by offering residencies at several locations in Västra Götaland. The residencies focus on exploratory artistic work and provide opportunities for inspiration and in-depth study.
