2024: Nedbrytningen / The decomposition

Christoph Matt

Christoph is an Austrian eco-social designer based between Reykjavik and Vienna. He founded Studio Matt, an award-winning bureau for environmentally and socially conscious design, working thoughtfully for planet earth, the human and more-than-human. He works as an interdisciplinary facilitator with a diverse background in design, sustainability, visual arts, and posthumanism. As a design researcher he focuses on how to build relations of nature and humans with participatory design methods and artistic practice.

The autumn residency – the decomposition – explore the decomposing underground heroes like bacteria, fungi and the decomposer insects in mind and spirit. Without them there would be no soil and therefore not much life on this planet. (Heroes is an understatement!)

The autumn artist-in-coexistence Christoph Matt brought his Nature Design Laboratory to AiC and Åsen in the format of Decomposition Watch. The residency work ”The Decomposition Watch” is one performative action where Christoph Maria Matt welcome and watch after the humans of the workshop gang to not disrupt the decomposers in work, calls for care and curiosity.

During a series of participatory activities, a large and diverse body of material has been co-created through writing, sensing, tracing, translating and transforming. This zine compiles the conducted research which manifest the curiosity and the will to follow the decomposer, and practice coexistence though embodied relationships.

AiC also propose that we metaphorically use this time of the year – the decomposition – where death and life so beautifully meet, to leave the toxic way of being human in the Anthropocene. In one mindful ritual, to compost it, leave it to rotten, to further unfold into other, and maybe from soil will rise the birth of a post-human. Who will you become after?
