2026: Vibrerandet / The vibrancy
Xiyao Chen
Xiyao Chen is an interdisciplinary artist and researcher based in London. They often work against the grain, in the expanded field across more-than-human anthropology,queer ecology, moving images and sonic installation. Their practice is driven in response to climate entanglements and rethinking the hybrid environments where human, machine and nature coexist interdependently, where distinctions between the organism and machine, physical and virtual have become increasingly leaky. They are currently nurturing an embodied practice that values care over extraction, challenging eco-social injustices by focusing on more-than-human interspecies kinship and the affective turn in ecology.
︎Bodies of Water︎
Drawing on Astrida Neimanis' concept that "we are all bodies of water" Xiyao approaches photography as a porous, relational practice, a way of thinking through the entangled connections between bodies, more-than-humans, and wider ecosystems. Through their longterm project Situated Cinema, co-initiated with Hadriana Casla, they have been developing collective, ecological methods of image-making: developing 35mm film with local weeds and kitchen waste, and making cameraless rayographs by submerging photographic paper directly into brackish water under the moon.
For the AiC Residency, they will bring this practice to Orust, creating water rayographs across different water bodies as a way of letting the situated environment (turbidity, wave movement, micro-organisms, light) direct the image. Xiyao seeks to find collective spaces for reflecting on our entangled existences.
